Derived from two Chinese characters, Heung and Gong, Hong Kong’s English name is directly translated as “Fragrant Harbour”. Some historians suggest the name was inspired by the location’s export of fragrant incense.

This coastal city is located in the south-east of China, bordering the Chinese province of Guangdong. Because of its strategic location at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, it was colonised by Great Britain in 1841. From a small fishing village, Hong Kong has been transformed to become one of the busiest international business centres in the world.

Hong Kong’s sovereignty was reverted to China in 1997. Under ‘one-country-two-systems’ principle, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) continues to grow its strategic importance in the region, as an international financial centre and a logistics hub.

Hong Kong has a colourful mix of nationalities, cultures and languages. It is a city where East meets West. It is a city that never sleeps. From a small coastal town, Hong Kong has turned into a vibrant and dynamic city that offers opportunities and excitements.
