Do's & Don'ts

Do's & Don'ts from a true Hong Konger
Getting Settled
Check your entrance visa for the length of stay in immigration no matter how long you are planning to stay. The official stamp should be in your passport. Any alternation status should be reported to the Immigration Department in advance.

Work
Apply for a work permit from the Immigration Department if you intend to work here. Unless you have made employment arrangement abroad in advance.

Remember to make appointments via the Internet or phone before visiting the Immigration Department. You never know how long the process will take.
Forget to take every document with you, otherwise you will be forced to make another appointment and lose another day.
Getting Around
Taxis
Remember that the driver will charge you for baggage and tunnels fees at the end of the journey.

Get familiar with these colors of the taxis:
Red - urban district
Green - the New Territories
Blue - Lantau Island
Ask for a receipt after the flag has gone up, because all the data would have been lost, so be sure to inform the driver ahead of time.
Mini-buses
There are some custom in taking the mini bus, see if you can exercise them on your next ride.

Shout "YAU LOK" (Cantonese) or "Stop please" loudly when you want to get off.
Put on your seat belt.
Expect the driver to carry changes on him, make sure you have the exact change at the time of boarding.
Trains
Bear in mind that there are three train systems in Hong Kong.
Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
This is the one you will catch at the airport. A subway serves the urban district.
Kowloon/Canton railway (KCR)
A rail going from central Kowloon to Lo Wu at the border with the China mainland.
Light Rail Transit (LRT)
A rail system running way out in the New Territories.

Buy an OCTOPUS card in order to save your time and money.
Leave your children unattended, the train station tends to be very crowded.
Leisure Guide
Hong Kong is a great place for outdoor activities with its extensive selections of hiking trails. For the less adventurous, shopping is always a great way to spend your day.

Remember to tell someone where you are going when you go hiking, and carry a mobile phone with you at all time.
Look around carefully before you buy. There are hundreds of stalls in wet markets selling the same goods but not all at the same price.
Hesitate to bargain to get a better price in market. And avoid purchasing illegal pirated goods from the vendors.
